WNBA Legend Candace Parker Picks Tennessee Over Georgia During College GameDay

Parker donned a number three Robert Meachum jersey to honor the former Vols and NFL wide receiver.

Tennessee Lady Vols icon Candace Parker served as celebrity guest picker for Saturday’s edition of College Gameday in Knoxville. She was given an opportunity to make what others felt was an obvious choice between her alma mater and Georgia Bulldogs ahead of the SEC showdown. Dressed in orange, the WNBA legend made her choice clear next to analysts such as Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit. 

The Los Angeles Sparks superstar who has proclaimed that she ‘bleeds orange’, donned a number three Robert Meachum jersey to honor the former Vols and NFL wide receiver. “We bout to let the world in on a secret that Tennessee is the best college town in the world, and we’re gonna get hype,” said Parker as she got the Vols fans pumped up. 

During her collegiate career, Parker led the Lady Vols to two titles and averaged 19.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. She also received the John R. Wooden Honor in 2007 and 2008, along with Naismith Award in 2008. In addition to this, Ace was named the NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Game in 2007 and 2008 before being named the SEC Player of the Year. 

Candace Parker Expresses Interest in Bringing WNBA to Tennessee 

Following a successful collegiate career, Parker moved to the WNBA and was selected as the first pick in the 2008 WNBA drafts by the Los Angeles Sparks. She played for three teams, and won a trophy with each of them. Parker was named WNBA Finals MVP once, WNBA MVP twice and an All-Star seven times in her illustrious career. During her Saturday’s College GameDay appearance, she expressed her interest in bringing W to Tennessee. 

“Tennessee, Nashville needs a team — I’m going to speak it into existence,” she said. “We’re going to keep trying to get a team and I hope that the WNBA and the NBA sees the value of Nashville being a part of the WNBA.”

Notably, an ownership group including Parker, Peyton Manning, Bill and Crissy Haslam, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw submitted a bid for a WNBA expansion team in Nashville on Jan. 30, per a release by the Pat Summitt Leadership Group.
