Why is Vancouver Canucks on the Verge of Losing an Important Player Ahead of the NHL 2025-2026 Season?

Rohan Singh

Quinn Hughes has been leading the team as their star performer but do the Vancouver Canucks have what it takes to keep him longer?

The Vancouver Canucks were out of the Playoffs contention once again in the 2024-2025 season. They were 5th in the Western Pacific standings with a record of 38-30-14 during the regular season. However, as the Canucks get read to take on the 2025-2026 season, there are rumors about one of their key players.

Their captain, Quinn Hughes, has merely two years left in his contract. The Canucks had their best years but they are still unable to win the Stanley Cup trophy. They are among the two oldest teams to have never won a Stanley Cup alongside the Buffalo Sabres.

However, as the season draws close experts are reasoning that Hughes would not want to continue with the Sabres. The most probable option for Quinn Hughes are the New Jersey Devils, where he will join his brothers, Jack and Luke.

Quinn Hughes Expected to Leave Vancouver Canucks After His Current Contract

Quinn Hughes is a star prospect in the NHL since his rookie days. He was 7th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft when the Vancouver Canucks drafted him. He was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2020. Since then, he has made name for himself in NHL defence.

He was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2024 as the best defence man. He is at the peak of his game currently. Hughes would want to spend his time and efforts on a team which can relay results. The Canucks are not a team which is giving him the same satisfaction.

Quinn Hughes would rather commit to a team which has a bright future ahead. He may be the best but he is not enough alone to win the Stanley Cup for the Vancouver Canucks.

If the Vancouver Canucks fail to make the cut with one more mediocre season, they will find it incredibly difficult to keep him. For Hughes, a contract with the Devils is important both personally and professionally. His brothers are there for a reason.

The New Jersey Devils are on a rise recently. The team is also stacking up younger talents in order to challenge the Stanley Cup championship. Their intentions are clear- they are here to win. In comparison to them, the Canucks are rather laid back. They might have to start full-scale rebuild to have a fair chance at the Playoffs.
