Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams may not have been able to prevent his team from losing its season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football yesterday, but what he is hoping to do is be a voice in support of suicide prevention.
Celebrities and famous athletes can be huge role models for the general public, as the common man has the tendency to believe in their heroes. Taking a cue from his popularity, Williams came to the game with a noble gesture, with actions that spoke louder than words.
Prior to the game against the Vikings, Williams was seen supporting the cause by painting his nails with a clear message against the terrible act. Williams, who has a habit of painting his nails, took inspiration from ‘World Suicide Prevention Day’ which falls on September 10, as he coated the middle finger of his right hand with a small ribbon, while his index and ring fingers were painted in green and purple, respectively.

Moreover, on his left hand, the second-year starting quarterback for the Bears painted the number 988 on his index, middle, and ring fingers, respectively. The number painted on his nails is the Suicide and Crisis Helpline number.
The USC alum has a history of painting his nails that goes back to his final year of high school. Growing up, he drew inspiration for painting his nails from his mother, who is a nail technician. Last year, Williams even spoke about how his mother always does his nails, and although others do not do it, it has been a part of who he is.

The 23-year-old’s painted nails are often at the receiving end of criticism, and the hate has only grown ever since he entered the NFL, particularly due to his growing stature in the game. However, it has not deterred him from ever changing the habit; on the contrary, the youngster has used it as a positive way to connect with fans and others while communicating important messages, such as the one during yesterday’s game.
As far as how things are going on the field, the Bears ended up losing their home opener at Soldier Field against divisional rivals, the Vikings. Up next for Williams and Chicago is a short journey to Detroit, where they take on the Lions in week 2. Williams will be looking to lead the Bears to a better record than their 5-12 campaign last season.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
