Sami Zayn Defeats Rey Fenix To Successfully Defend his Title For The First Time on Friday Night SmackDown

Ashish Negi

Sami Zayn defeated Rey Fenix in a hard-fought match to retain his WWE United States Championship on SmackDown tonight. This was his first successful title defence, and he had to earn it as Rey Fenix was in no mood to give up. In fact, Rey Fenix dominated Sami Zayn most of the match and showcased his wide range of moves inside the ring.

Rey Fenix lost the match in the closing moments as Sami Zayn countered one of his moves into a Blue Thunder Bomb. He then delivered an Exploder to Rey Fenix, and while the latter was able to dodge Helluva Kicks until now, it is what became his doomsday. Sami Zayn finally was able to connect one Helluva Kick, and it was all he required to retain his title.

Sami Zayn and Rey Fenix Showcased Immense Respect For One Another

Sami Zayn has been trying to become a fighting champion. He defeated Solo Sikoa to become the new United States Champion on August 29, 2025. He has been part of two US Championship matches in two weeks since becoming champion. While his first match was brutally interrupted when Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar, attacked both him and John Cena, he was able to secure a victory in the second one.

Sami Zayn showed huge respect for both his opponents. He praised Rey Fenix before their match started, and the latter returned the favor as well. The match between them kept the crowd on the edge of their seat as they witnessed some incredible moves, counters, and kickouts. The momentum shifted from Rey Fenix to Sami Zayn and back many times during the match, but Sami Zayn was able to keep his nerves.
