The latest stats have reignited the debate about the overuse of 3-point shooting.
For decades, the mid-range jumper was king. Then came the 3-point revolution. Now? We have hit a moment that perfectly sums up just how much basketball has changed. In the 2024-25 season, NBA teams are now missing more 3-pointers than 2-pointers.
Let that sink in.
According to data from NBA Analyst Kirk Goldsberry, this season teams are averaging 47.2 missed two-point shots per game, and 48.0 missed threes. It’s a tiny gap, but a massive signal that the 3-point era isn’t just here, it’s taken over.
For the first time in NBA history missed 3s are now more common than missed 2s.

An average NBA game now includes 1 missed 3 per minute.

Go back to 1979, when the NBA introduced the 3-point line. Teams barely used it, averaging only 2.0 three-pointers per game. Fast forward to today, and 3s are everywhere with teams now averaging around 40 attempts per game.
This shift didn’t happen overnight. It’s been building for years. But now we are seeing the side effect. Missed threes have climbed so high they have surpassed the missed twos. It’s not that shooters are worse. It’s just that the volume is out of control.

This stat arrives at a time when the league is asking an important question: Are there too many threes in the NBA?
With Boston Celtics on the verge of breaking NBA records for the most 3-pointers made and attempted by a team in one season, the conversation has hit a boiling point.
Whether or not the league decides to tweak the rules, this season’s stat line is a milestone.
Missed threes are now just as common as missed twos. And if that doesn’t scream “Welcome to the Modern NBA,” nothing does.
