Joel Embiid Injury Update: Philadelphia 76ers’ Star To Undergo Knee Arthroscopy Next Week

Swati Bhatia

The former MVP will have a second surgery to repair his left knee.

Philadelphia 76ers’ star center Joel Embiid is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next week, the team announced on Wednesday. Embiid is expected to be re-evaluated in six weeks, with the franchise hoping he will be ready for the start of next season.

“Following consultations with medical experts, it has been determined that Joel Embiid will undergo arthroscopic surgery next week to address his left knee,” according to a statement released by the team.

Notably, this will be the second procedure on the same knee within a year. Embiid underwent meniscus surgery in early 2024, but returned later in the season for the playoffs, where the Sixers were eliminated in the first round by the New York Knicks. He also played for Team USA in the Paris Olympics. However, shortly before the start of the season, inflammation issues started resurfacing which limited him to just 19 games.

Embiid averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in just 19 games this season before being ruled out.

Drafted third overall in 2014, Embiid’s career has been marred by injuries. Over his nine seasons in the NBA, he has played 452 games and missed over 400 games due to injuries and suspensions.
