Sinner commits to evolve after 2025 US Open final loss to Alcaraz
Shortly after falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 US Open final on Sunday, Jannik Sinner acknowledged that he needs to evolve his game if he is to consistently challenge the Spaniard. The 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat at Arthur Ashe Stadium not only ended Sinner’s winning streak in New York but also cost him the No. 1 ranking. The Italian conceded he was “predictable” on court and emphasized that stepping out of his comfort zone is the only way forward.
Jannik Sinner says he needs to become more unpredictable to become a better tennis player:

“I was very predictable on court today. He changed up the game. That’s also his style of how he plays. Now it’s gonna be on me if I want to make changes or not. We’re definitely gonna work… pic.twitter.com/eF9eeofyez
“I was very predictable today on the court,” Sinner admitted after the loss. He changed up the game. That’s also his style of how he plays. Now it’s gonna be on me if I want to make changes or not. We’re definitely gonna work on that. Then you arrive at the point where you have to play Carlos, you have to go out of the comfort zone. I’m gonna aim… maybe even lose some matches from now on, but trying to do some changes. To be a bit more unpredictable as a player. That’s what I have to do, trying to become a better tennis player. At the end of the day, that’s my main goal.”
When Alcaraz was asked if he agreed with Sinner’s assessment, he said, “I wouldn’t say he’s predictable, but I know his style. I know what he’s going to do (and the) main weapons (in) his game,” the champion explained.
Carlos Alcaraz on if Jannik Sinner is getting too predictable:

"I wouldn't say I read his game, that he was predictable… I watch a lot of his matches. First of all, because I love watching him play. I think it is unbelievable what he's doing…"

Sinner pointed out his statistical shortcomings on Sunday, where just 48% of first serves landed in, allowing Alcaraz 11 break points. The Italian generated only one break point himself and did not attempt a single serve-and-volley. Those “little things,” Sinner sighed, are what build confidence under pressure, an area where he believes Alcaraz currently has the edge.
However, Sinner’s consistency has been remarkable. Since his 2024 US Open title, he has reached five straight major finals, compiling a 33-2 record in that span. His lone Slam triumph, against Alcaraz, came at Wimbledon, but otherwise, the Spaniard has had his number. Sinner’s record against Alcaraz since the start of 2024 sits at 1-7, compared to a staggering 109-4 against the rest of the field.
Tried my best, couldn’t do more. Congrats to @carlosalcaraz and his team, you deserve it 🏆 Thanks for all the support ❤️ I’m really proud of myself and the season I’m playing. We keep building. See you next year. @usopen pic.twitter.com/VYUXTJfx9q

“I felt like he was doing everything slightly better today, especially serving,” Sinner said. “I give lots of credit to him, because he handled the situation better than I did. He raised his level when he had to. I’m still proud of myself, about the season I’m (having), but he played better than me today.”
