Chicago Sky in under heavy scrutiny following Angel Reese's suspension for her remarks about organization and teammates.
Chicago Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca addressed rumors surrounding star forward Angel Reese and said that she will stay on the roster until he ‘hears differently’. Pagliocca’s comments came after Sky suffered a 91-86 loss to the reigning champions, New York Liberty on Thursday, and ended their 2025 WNBA regular season with a disastrous 10-31 record. Apart from their embarrassing record, what kept Sky in the headline was Reese’s public criticism of the team’s roster.
In one of her interviews, she not only expressed her concerns about the 2021 champions’ poor form but also indicated that she might have to consider moving somewhere else. In addition to it, she also made a few remarks about her teammates including franchise legend Courtney Vandersloot. While the two-time WNBA All-Star apologized to the organization and her teammates, she was handed a half-game suspension on September 7. Reese didn’t lace up following the announcement, and was listed as dealing with a back injury for its final three games. This raised concerns about Reese’s move from the Sky.
However, GM Pagliocca himself admitted that the Sky needed to improve their roster in the offseason. During the team’s exit interview, he also addressed the rumors surrounding Reese’s potential move. He said, “Angel is an ascending young talent in this league who’s had two very, very good seasons here in Chicago.”
“Obviously we went through what we did. I feel like we closed the chapter on it. She spoke to her teammates, she spoke publicly. We moved on as a team. She’s a special player. And I have good conversations with Angel daily, with her team daily. They’re constant, and they’re productive, and until I hear differently, that’s the direction we’re gonna move in, is that she’s on the roster.”
While Angel Reese’s comments were frank and ill-advised as a teammate, what she said about the team’s campaign wasn’t incorrect. The two-time WNBA finalists have disappointed Reese for a second consecutive season. After leading her team in rebounds and steals during her debut campaign, the 23-year-old averaged 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game in her sophomore season. In fact, the Sky has been failing all its players for far longer with multiple reasons which vary from making poor trade choices to a lack of management.
It might have come to Reese that she is wasting her talent at an organization which is so unserious. However, she is not a free agent this offseason, which means she doesn’t have much control over her immediate future. With one year more left on her contract, there’s a team option for her final year. Hence, any move or change would come in the form of a trade.
Would Reese request a trade? Only time will tell. But the Sky has clearly fallen behind the rest of the league, and they must fix their disputes and take control of the situation if they want to see themselves rising to the championship level ever again.
