Gabriel Bortoleto was able to beat his teammate on two occasions in the previous race weekends and is now looking a strong contender in the Rookie of the Year battle.
Gabriel Bortoleto is the 2024 Formula 2 championship winner. He started off his 2025 season with the humble Sauber car. Bortoleto was initially not able to highlight his talent among the other overachieving rookies like Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli. Although recently, not only has he become better with the Sauber. He is also bringing better results than his teammate.
The newest upgrades by Kick Sauber are no joke. The team which was hardly competing with the other midfielders in 2025 is now a regular contender for top-10s during a race weekend. And Gabriel Bortoleto has benefitted a lot from these new upgrades. While the Brazilian rookie was unable to get good results in the first few races. He has been steadily climbing up the ladder during his recent outings. In the Hungary Grand Prix, Gabriel Bortoleto finished P6 to bring the best results of his F1 season as of August 2025.
Gabriel Bortoleto had an impressive CV before joining the 2025 Formula 1 season. Although, he was never a part of the discussion among the other favourites joining the sport this season. Bortoleto’s Formula 1 arrival was overshadowed by the likes of Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli. Even Oliver Bearman had a better reputation owing to his stint with Haas and Ferrari.
Even though, Bortoleto has been winning the junior series. People were doubting his pace. Gabi on the other hand made sure to put down the criticism and doubts about his talent. He is managed by Fernando Alonso. In a previous interview, Bortoleto also put a lot of emphasis on Fernando Alonso’s teachings.

Jolyon Palmer has taken a closer look at Gabi's impressive weekend at the Hungaroring ✍️👇#F1 #HungarianGPhttps://t.co/xC5fUomFQ0
Fast forward to 2025, Gabi was struggling due to the lack of pace displayed Sauber. Even though, he had not brought forth a miraculous finish like his teammate, the team principal still appreciated his effort. In the last two weekends, Gabi has far outshone his competitors for the Rookie of the Year title.
Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar may have made an impressive start to the season. But now, slowly but surely Gabi was catching up to his fellow rookies. The brilliance displayed by Gabi in Budapest is enough proof about his work and race craft.
Gabriel Bortoleto’s drive in Hungary might be one of his finest races yet. Gabi was able to perfectly execute a one-stop strategy. It was a difficult one to cover nonetheless. However, Gabi’s racing not only brought a good point haul for the team, but also put him in spotlight after the Grand Prix.
I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
Message to Readers: I promise you one day you’ll see me managing operations on track with a Formula 1 team ; )
