With the win, the Dream moved past the Las Vegas Aces to gain sole possession of second spot.
The Atlanta Dream defeated the Connecticut Sun in a blowout fashion at 87-62 on Monday, September 8, to wrap up their 2025 WNBA regular season at home. Rhyne Howard led the Dream with 18 points, five rebounds, and six assists as the Dream won their fifth straight game, and moved a spot up in the standings. Allisha Gray poured in 15 points and six rebounds, while Naz Hillmon finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. In addition, Brittney Griner and Maya Caldwell were two other players who recorded double-digit scores for the winners.
With the win, Dream head coach, Karl Smesko, earned his 29th win of the season, which is the most ever by a first-year head coach in WNBA history. With the record, he surpassed Michael Cooper’s 28 wins in 2000. On the other hand, the Sun, who are now 11-32 in the standings, were led by Saniya Rivers. She dropped 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists and set a new franchise rookie record for most threes in a single season at 42. Aneesah Morrow poured in 13 points and 14 rebounds, whereas Tina Charles chipped in 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists.

Both teams gave a tough competition to each other in the first half, and entered halftime with a difference of only two points. The Dream recorded a 26-24 lead in the first quarter and remained ahead by two points at 45-43 before the break. The Sun entered the third quarter with full force and Saniya Rivers ended up scoring the first six points of the quarter for the Sun.
Without delaying further, the Dream followed and went on a nine point run to take their lead to 61-49 with around three minutes left in the third quarter. They then went on to score the last seven points of the quarter to claim a 68-52 lead. Atlanta went on to score 23 and 19 points, respectively in the last two quarters while holding Sun to 9 and 10 points, respectively.
Overall, the winners grabbed 41 rebounds, and dished out 23 assists as compared to Sun’s 33 rebounds, and 15 assists. They held their rivals at 24/66 from the field and 7/20 threes while shooting 35/74 from the field and 8/26 from the three-point range. The Dream will now travel to Connecticut to wrap up the regular season campaign on Wednesday, September 10.
