Anthony Davis Injury Update: What Happened to Anthony Davis? Will He Be Fit for the NBA Season Opener?

Dallas Mavericks face uncertainty with Anthony Davis

The Dallas Mavericks are waiting on answers about the availability of Anthony Davis for the start of the 2025-26 season. The star underwent eye surgery during the offseason and remains in recovery, raising doubts about whether he will be ready when training camp begins on September 30.

NBA insider Marc Stein questioned whether Davis will be cleared to return to basketball activities in time for camp. After appearing in just nine games for the Dallas Mavericks last season due to injury, Davis’ health remains a central concern.

His absence would be a major setback for the Mavericks, who are already preparing to start the year without Kyrie Irving as he recovers from a torn ACL.

If Anthony Davis is unavailable, rookie Cooper Flagg may be asked to play a significant role right away. The team could also turn to P.J. Washington as a short-term option in the starting lineup.

In the NBA 2024-25 season, Anthony Davis averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.2 steals per game, shooting 51.6% from the field. Despite those strong numbers, his limited availability highlighted the risks Dallas accepted when they traded Luka Doncic for him last year.

Big-Picture Concerns for Mavericks

The Mavericks’ championship window shrank with the decision to swap a younger cornerstone for Anthony Davis, who is nearly six years older. The front office understood the risks of acquiring an injury prone player, and those concerns have quickly resurfaced.

With the timeline of Anthony Davis unclear and Irving sidelined until the new year, the Mavs could find themselves depending heavily on their rookie. Cooper Flagg may be the league’s most hyped young prospect in years, but the franchise cannot expect him to immediately carry them to contention.

The team will have more clarity on Davis’ status once training camp opens. Until then, the uncertainty around his recovery leaves the Mavericks bracing for another difficult season start.
