New York Knicks Sign Point Guard Malcolm Brogdon to a One-Year Contract

Gulshan Sharma

Last season, the New York Knicks returned to the Eastern Conference Finals after a 25-year absence.

The New York Knicks agreed, this Friday, to sign veteran Malcolm Brogdon. Initially, the point guard signed a one-year contract with the franchise, with values not yet revealed. The expectation is that it will be a minimum link, since the Knicks do not have much space in the salary cap. Shams Charania, from American ESPN, anticipated the information.

Brogdon had been on the free market since the end of his stint with the Washington Wizards. In one season with the Washington Wizards, he ended up playing in just 24 games, starting 13 of them. During those games, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds. Once again, he struggled with numerous injuries.

Selected by the Milwaukee Bucks 36th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, Brogdon became the first player not selected in the first round to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award since 1957. After three years with the Wisconsin team, he signed with the Indiana Pacers.

In Indianapolis, the point guard would enjoy the best seasons of his career until being traded to the Boston Celtics. During the 2022-23 season, he won the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Celtics and also played for the Portland Trail Blazers before arriving in Washington. Initially, he was being sought after by several franchises, including the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Knicks Banking on Roster Depth to Shine in the East

Last season, the New York Knicks returned to the Eastern Conference Finals after a 25-year absence. However, they lost in just five games to the Indiana Pacers. This led to renewed criticism of Tom Thibodeau for not using his reserves.

For the upcoming campaign, the team, now under Mike Brown’s leadership, has focused on strengthening its roster to take a step forward. During the offseason, they signed Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, as well as the return of Landry Shamet.

New York Knicks’ Potential Lineup for Season 2025-26:

PG: Jalen Brunson
SG: Mikal Bridges
SF: Josh Hart
PF: OG Anunoby
C: Karl-Anthony Towns

Bench:

  • Malcolm Brogdon
  • Jordan Clarkson
  • Miles McBride
