All You Need to Know: Sinner vs. Ruud, Start Time, Broadcast Info & Match Preview
Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud are set to clash in the 2025 Italian Open quarterfinals, with Sinner holding a commanding 3-0 lead in their head-to-head. Ruud, however, enters the match riding a wave of momentum after capturing the Madrid title and reaching the quarterfinals in Barcelona. Sinner, playing just his second event of the year after serving a three-month suspension for Clostebol (a banned substance), has looked sharp despite the layoff.
The world No. 1 and reigning Australian Open champion remains undefeated in 2025. Meanwhile, Ruud holds a solid 21-6 record this season, featuring his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. He’s been a clay court specialist, while Sinner is yet to drop a set in Rome, underlining his growing confidence on the dirt.

Now, whether Sinner will extend his already commanding head-to-head or Ruud with his form, or will Ruud finally flip the script, is the question looming here.
Their rivalry has been entirely one-sided in Sinner’s favor so far. It all began in Vienna in 2020, where the Italian won in straight sets, including the only tiebreak they’ve ever played. A year later, they met again at the same event with the same outcome. Most recently, at the 2024 ATP Finals, Sinner delivered another dominant performance.
But there’s a twist this time: all their previous meetings came on hard courts, a surface tailor-made for Sinner’s aggressive baseline game. In Rome, however, he’ll be up against Ruud on clay, Ruud’s playground. The Norwegian’s heavy forehand and comfort on the dirt (12 of his 13 titles have come on clay) make him a different kind of threat.

Sure, Sinner has plenty of support from the home crowd. But Ruud arrives in top form, with a Masters 1000 title in his bag and momentum on his side. Sinner may be undefeated in 2025, but this matchup has all the makings of his first loss and possibly Ruud’s biggest win. If Ruud not only wins but does so convincingly, it could mark Sinner’s toughest defeat of the season, one delivered by a clay specialist on home soil.
